Jose Mourinho has come out in defence of “my boy” David de Gea following the Spaniard’s nightmare mistake on his World Cup debut against Portugal.
De Gea, having enjoyed the finest season of his career at Manchester United, looks set to extend his future at the club in the coming weeks.
But his mistake against Portugal, which saw him let a routine Cristiano Ronaldo shot slip through his fingers, demonstrated that, firstly, he is human and, more importantly, doesn’t feel the same confidence playing for Spain like he does at Old Trafford.
Speaking on RT after the game, Mourinho was quick to note that De Gea simply wouldn’t make the same mistake in a Man United shirt.
“He’s my boy,” he said. “It hurts me to say but he knows, he knows, it’s a bad mistake. But that happens to the best, the good thing with the best is he will be there next match, not afraid.”
“It’s a mistake he doesn’t make with us, United – player of the season, fantastic performances. But that happens to the best.”
Spain cannot take any credit for De Gea’s development into the best goalkeeper in the world. If anything, his homeland has only been responsible for the negative aspects of his career.
Playing an ageing and spent Iker Casillas over him for a number of years, for example, didn’t help his relationship with the national team one bit. Nor has the Spanish media’s continued fabrication of links with Real Madrid been exactly helpful.
It is perhaps no wonder that ever since that botched move to the Bernabeu in 2015 he has never even remotely looked like returning to Spain. By doing so he would be leaving an environment which relentlessly provides love and support and entering a sphere containing only apathy and unnecessary noise.
